Located just north of Boston in Beverly, Massachusetts, Endicott is a small, seaside private college with a strong community and a proven experiential learning model. Endicott College chose The Reference to help recreate their Sitecore implementation. The end result improved the experience of the website and enabled their editors to create content more efficiently.
Each department at Endicott functions almost like its own government structure, where each has its own governance, with a central communication strategy for the school itself.
The initial solution was built with the right platform, Sitecore, but was essentially a straight port from HTML to get the content into Sitecore as quickly as possible. This meant that almost all of the content was managed as blocks of HTML. This presented difficulties for a staff that has many more responsibilities than providing content to the website. Some of the staff was not familiar with HTML, some were, but would create things outside of the overall brand, and many just did not update anything. Using Sitecore's robust workflow, user and roles framework enables Endicott to manage the content across departments easily.
The first system integrated is the course catalog, managed by Acalog. Initially, the catalog was displayed in a default state and course descriptions needed to be managed by hand when referenced outside the catalog itself. Our integration ensures that the content is managed only within Acalog and can be easily referenced within content via an integration in Sitecore's editor. Managing campus alerts was another major concern as important and potentially life-saving information needed to be displayed as easily as possible. With a simple update, alerts can be shown when available. Finally, the school manages many different calendars. Our integration with the Active Data Calendar enables editors to easily reference and link both calendars and individual events within the Sitecore editor.
The story is a complex front-end development framework built on top of existing standards. The use of standards and advanced techniques allows the story to provide a smooth user experience throughout without removing details or interactivity. The result is a set of pages that create a unique interactive story experience across all devices.
