Retrospective on Beyond the AI Hype

On May 20th, we gathered with over 50 companies at The Lab in Ghent to unpack a simple but essential idea: AI doesn't have to be big to make a difference.

The event, Beyond the AI Hype, wasn’t about chasing trends or showcasing the latest models. It was about finding clarity in a space often crowded by noise — and discovering that the real power of AI lies in its ability to quietly improve the way we work, every day.

A Program Built for Real Impact

Mathieu Van de Velde kicked things off with a practical session on AI for content validation, showing how automation can improve consistency and reduce editorial overhead.

Matti Vissers shared how AI is quietly transforming SEO in The Future of Search, helping teams adapt to conversational search and smarter algorithms.

Jeroen Meeus (The Reference) and Pascal Labbe (Brustor) teamed up to show how Smarter Search can happen without heavy lifting — by enhancing what’s already there.

A debate with Sarah Claeys as moderator, followed, exploring the balance between ambition and practicality in real-world AI adoption.

After a short coffee break, Robin Ponnet and Christophe Lagast took the stage with a sharp dive into Anomaly Detection via AI, illustrating how subtle signals in data can flag major issues — before they hit users.

Geoffrey Parsons (EPAM Company) shifted focus to retail with his session AI in Retail: Beyond Automation, sharing how brands are using AI to enhance, not just automate, customer experience.

Kris Verheire showcased how AI in B2B commerce is streamlining everything from product search to lead nurturing in webshops.

And to close, Thomas De Vos and Leon Jacobs (Empathy Lab by EPAM) delivered an eye-opening session titled “Not All That Glitters is GenAI Gold — but Sometimes, It Is.” A fitting finale, challenging us to stay both critical and curious.

From Pilot Projects to Practical Value

One theme echoed throughout the sessions: AI is no longer the exclusive domain of tech teams and innovation hubs. It’s becoming a pragmatic tool — one that supports business-critical goals across marketing, operations, and product development.

Several speakers emphasized this shift from experimentation to implementation. Whether through AI-assisted content tagging, smarter personalization strategies, or pattern recognition in search behavior, the most impactful use cases didn’t rely on models — they relied on thoughtful integration and a clear sense of purpose.

Technology Meets Content Strategy

A recurring undercurrent was the need for composability — not just in tech stacks, but in mindset. Teams that adopted modular thinking were able to move faster, adapt more easily, and ensure consistency across regions, platforms, and channels.

In one session, attendees saw how a modular CMS combined with AI tools enabled companies to scale global content operations without sacrificing local relevance or editorial oversight. This wasn’t innovation for innovation’s sake — it was smart orchestration, rooted in business reality.

And What About Asset Creation?

One of the more visual highlights of the event centered around product content — and how AI can take the weight off your creative teams without compromising brand consistency.

We explored cases where AI-generated imagery is already replacing the need for traditional pack shots. Branded visuals created in minutes, adapted across formats, and seamlessly matched to tone-of-voice or campaign aesthetics — all without a camera in sight.

Thomas, our in-house AI expert, demonstrated how these AI-generated assets can even be merged into short-form videos. Branded, coherent, and dynamic — ready for marketing in a fraction of the usual time and cost.

Is it perfect? Not quite. But it’s evolving fast. And it’s a glimpse into a future where creative production is no longer a bottleneck, but a fluid part of the content supply chain.

The Most Powerful Takeaway? Just Start.

If there was one conclusion shared by every speaker and echoed in every conversation, it was this:

Start somewhere. Even if it’s small. Especially if it’s small.

You don’t need a dedicated AI team, months of training, or a six-figure budget to move forward. What you need is focus — on the friction points, the repetitive tasks, the slow processes holding your teams back.

Because when AI is applied thoughtfully — not to impress, but to improve — things start happening. Faster. Smarter. With less stress and more space to think.

AI as a Chill Factor

One of the more surprising insights from the day? AI can actually reduce complexity. It’s not about adding another layer of tooling — it’s about taking friction out of the system.

Examples ranged from automating metadata creation and detecting anomalies in content performance, to powering personalised commerce journeys — not through flashy features, but through clear logic and composable integration.

The result: less chaos. Fewer bottlenecks. More progress.

The real question companies should ask isn’t “Where can we use AI?” It’s “What’s getting in our way?”

What’s Slowing You Down?

That shift in mindset changes everything. It invites experimentation with purpose — using AI not as a gimmick, but as a lever.

One standout case at the event showed how a simple AI application in content operations reduced manual workload by over 60%, just by automating image tagging and metadata entry. Not revolutionary on paper — but deeply impactful in practice.

AI as a conversation starter

Perhaps most inspiring was the shift in tone. The conversation is no longer about whether to adopt AI, but how to do it responsibly, sustainably, and with focus. Participants were eager to learn, but equally ready to challenge assumptions, ask sharper questions, and share lessons from the field.

As one speaker noted, “We’re not looking for magic. We’re looking for impact.”

And that’s exactly what Beyond the AI Hype helped deliver.

Look for friction. Ask the people closest to the work. And don’t wait for perfect conditions. The only wrong move now is standing still.
