Securing the Web using HTTPS

Is your website running on HTTPS? And only on HTTPS? Stop reading. Otherwise, continue... and do it fast!

What is HTTPS and how does it differ from HTTP?

HTTP is the most used protocol for transferring data over the public internet. Your website and web applications are probably using it right now!

The problem with HTTP is that all data passes over the internet in an unsecured way. Anybody “listening” to this traffic, could see all actions and posted form data in clear text. This is of course not very secure and a serious privacy issue.

That’s why HTTPS was invented. You purchases an SSL certificate. That certificate is installed on the website and HTTPS is enabled.

From that moment onwards, all communication (webpages, form posts …) between your visitor and your website is fully encrypted and secured. An extra benefit from HTTPS: the visitor gets a confirmation the website is actually managed by your company.

Two extra reasons to use HTTPS: Google and W3C

Google has been striving for a HTTPS-only internet for the last couple of years. And now Google will actually give your site a higher ranking when it is using HTTPS.

The W3C published a document last year, explaining the benefits and steps (including pitfalls) how to transition your website from using HTTP to HTTPS-only. The full article can be found here.

Let’s get practical: how to activate HTTPS?

Just follow the easy flowchart below.

For the parts in blue, contact your implementation agency. They will be able to help you with the execution.

In our experience the efforts to do this are limited, but its importance shouldn't be underestimated. And above all, it will guarantee you a good night's sleep.
