Google chooses The Reference for realization of microsite “Year in Search” 2019

Yesterday, the 11th of December 2019, Google released their yearly “Year in Search”, in which the most “trending” search terms of the past year are listed. Full service digital agency The Reference developed the interactive microsite for Google.

Search terms

The lists with search terms tell us which subjects were most often searched for the past year in Belgium. In Flanders cartoonist Marc De Cloedt, Marec, created a cartoon which contains multiple people, events and occurrences that shaped 2019. In Wallonia cartoonist Vado drew the cartoon.

This year “wtFOCK”, the very popular series that follows the lives of a group of teenagers, is at the top of the list. Followed by Julie Van Espen, the Tour de France, Love Island and the Stemtest.

Animated microsite

At The Reference a core team of developers started building a microsite and made it a success. On the site https://www.yearinsearch.be/ you can, by hovering your mouse, discover the different personalities and occurrences. With just one click you also get some more information about the highlighted part.

“The microsite is not only informative, it is also very easy to use, and it contains several fun animations,” says Leon Van Loon, Project Manager at The Reference. “It was great to successfully complete this assignment for one of the biggest organizations in the world,” elaborates John De Wever, spokesperson for The Reference.

Fast & efficient

“The collaboration with an established partner as The Reference went like I expected it would: clear communication, creative thinking and an agile way of working. As a result, the project was able to go online quickly,” says Michiel Sallaets, Communications Manager at Google Belux.
